Though I know little of the internal details of how MTN Mobile Money works, I believe the workflow is good, except the part where they require you to fill paper forms.

- The service centers are necessary(for now). There has to be a way to put money into your account. I hear these service centers are "everywhere" in Kenya. In Cameroon, we have call boxes everywhere. These call boxes are usually a one-man show where someone , armed with a chair, an umbrella, and a mobile phone is ready to start selling credits to customers. An improvement I believe would be to permit those call boxes too to serve as salespoint. That is, since we are mostly using a prepaid model, I don't see how one couldn't just transfer credit (MTN Me2U) to someone else, and that person could, depending on the amount, just claim his due in cash from a local callbox. It would truly be paperless. The difficulty is the little amount of cash these local callboxes can handle.
- The SMS notifications are necessary. However, I believe the "per-transaction instructions" are not. When you send or receive money, it should either credit or debit your account balance. This I also believe will limit the amount of "trips" to service centers. With more and more people accepting a mobile payment option, there will be less need to transform your "virtual" credit balance into real cash, thus less need for these service centers.

Nice post with your focusing on Africa but failure of African startups go beyond being solo or otherwise. Several partnerships have failed too and egoism has a lot of play in why most go solo anyway. :-)
