@niyi
I will second Niyi. The most important thing is about what you do on it. If you primary assignment is to hangout with friends, well it might be a time waster. The business aspect also should not be overlooked as it a good boost for you business if put to good use.

Facebook is more than a social network. It could be a business network, depending on what you use it for. Thing is, I don't spend more than 15 minutes in total on Facebook. Not that I am not attracted but this is what I do.

I locked out all social network sites (as well as many other unwanted sites) on my office's network using a software firewall. Each time my hands drift to type facebook.com, I am greeted with a message that access to that site is restricted. Well, I have got used to the self discipline and only check Facebook from home. :)

Facebook can be a very powerful business tool when put to good use. You need to identify the business uses and maximize it. Personal stuff can be really tempting but business is more important in my view.

Well said.
I wasn't on facebook before, but the moment I registered, uploaded my pix and connected with some old time friends....... I was hooked up.
It does waste time really, but there are still some advantages as you did mention @ the end of your post.
Following your recommendation, I believe it will be of great help.

I think everybody need to check the value of what they are getting from the social networks against what they are putting in. If the former is less than the latter, then it is not worth your time. It takes time and I mean a lot of time (both quality and quantity) to be involved in social networks. I know people who stay all day on Facebook and can't point to one single thing they have gained.

While the platform has its advantages, it may place a limit on your personal development. The time spent on facebook, for instance, can be invested in learning about a new thing. You can invest that to read that book, study that subject or even work on your goals. I would suggest that people start by taking a day-break from social networking and watch the impact.
